- Chapter 1 - INTRODUCTION
-
- ____________________________________________________________________________
-
-
- This chapter describes the structure of the documentation and the
- terminology, symbols and characters used.
-
-
- 1.1 Structure of the Documentation
-
- Chapter 1 - Introduction. The Introduction describes the terminology,
- symbols and characters used in this documentation.
-
- Chapter 2 - Installation and Start-Up. This chapter describes the
- installation procedures for the IMF CD-ROM publications and how to start the
- programs associated with these publications.
-
- Chapter 3 - Search Strategies. This chapter introduces the commands and
- options used in formulating searches. It includes an explanation of logical
- connectors, operators and search parameters.
-
- Chapter 4 - Display, Print and Export. This chapter describes the different
- options for displaying, printing, and exporting retrieved documents.
-
-
- 1.2 Special Symbols, Keys and Terminology
-
- Throughout this document the <> symbols will be used to indicate the
- individual special keys on your personal computer keyboard (e.g. <Esc>
- indicates the Escape key). The following terms, symbols, and keystrokes are
- used throughout the documentation:
-
- Search Strategy This term refers to the group of criteria for searching
- in a database. For example, a search strategy may
- consist of a combination of words, numbers, and logical
- connections.
-
- Command Menu The Command Menu is a bar at the top of the screen that
- contains the available commands for the current
- operation.
-
- Search Mask The Search Mask is the window from which you execute
- your search strategy. It is the main window of the IMF
- CD-ROM publications.
-
- Menu Options Each Command Menu or sub-menu can include multiple menu
- options from which to choose. When you select a menu
- option, you will either execute a program function or
- open a sub-menu with new options.
-
- Menu Windows Sub-menus are shown in the form of a menu window that is
- displayed on top of the existing screen.
-
- Operators Operators are symbols that have a special function
- inside a field. A logical operator (such as AND)
- between two terms results in a logical connection
- between the terms.
-
- Help Function The IMF CD-ROM publications contain a help program that
- gives you information about your current program
- activities. This help text can be called up at any time
- using the F1 key.
-
- Tab With the tab key you can switch between the window on
- the screen and the Command Menu. You choose a command
- from within the Command Menu by using the arrow keys and
- pressing <Enter>. The chosen command is then executed.
-
- <Enter> The enter key executes a command or confirms an entry.
-
- Arrow keys The arrow keys move the cursor on the screen one
- character in the indicated direction.
-
- <Esc> The Escape key performs two functions: it deletes the
- contents of the field in which the cursor is located;
- and it brings you back to the previous program level.
- For example, if an error window appears on the screen,
- you can close it with Escape.
-
- <Spacebar> The spacebar is used to open a window containing further
- menu choices, to toggle between menu choices, or to
- cycle through a series of display masks.
-
- <PgUp>, <PgDn> These keys move the cursor one page up or one page down.
- They are primarily used to quickly look through
- documents or lists.
-
- <Home>, <End> These keys bring the cursor to the beginning or end of a
- row, a list, or a document.
-
- <Backspace> The backspace key deletes the character to the left of
- the cursor.
-
- <Ctrl> and This key combination deletes the entire row in which the
- <Backspace> cursor is located. Hold down the control key while you
- press backspace.
-
- <Ctrl> and Moves the cursor one word to the right in search
- <R arrow> screens, and scrolls the screen to the right in display
- screens.
-
- <Ctrl> and Moves the cursor one word to the left in search screens,
- <L arrow> and scrolls the screen to the left in display screens.
-
- <Delete> The delete key deletes the character marked by the
- cursor.
-
- <Insert> The insert key changes between insert mode, in which the
- characters to the right of the cursor are pushed to the
- right as you type, and overstrike mode, in which the
- newly typed characters take the place of the characters
- to the right as you type.
-
- Note: The individual keys on your keyboard may have slightly different
- labels.
- Chapter 2 - INSTALLATION AND START-UP
-
- ____________________________________________________________________________
-
-
- 2.1 System requirements
-
- The following is the minimum configuration required for running the IMF CD-
- ROM publications. The data retrieval speed of the IMF CD-ROM publications is
- partially dependent on the hardware. In general, the more memory and hard
- disk capacity you have, the better performance you will experience.
-
- Computer: IBM XT\AT\PS2 or 100% compatible with at least 640 KB memory,
- approximately 2.5 MB hard disk space, and a CD-ROM drive with
- appropriate controller and interface cable from any
- manufacturer that provides a High Sierra or ISO 9660
- compatible device driver (users may note that the software
- only requires 1.3 MB hard disk space, the remaining space is
- needed for temporary files created during the operation of
- the application).
-
- Operating System: MS DOS version 2.2 or higher.
-
- Other Software: Microsoft CD-ROM Extensions.
-
-
- 2.2 The CD-ROM package.
-
- The IMF CD-ROM disk is self contained in that it includes all the data,
- programs, and documentation associated with the IMF application. In order
- to access the CD-ROM disk as if it were a DOS visable hard disk it will be
- necessary to install Microsoft CD-ROM Extensions (see section x.x below).
- The directory of the CD-ROM disk should be similiar to the directory of the
- September 1991 issue of the IFS CD-ROM which follows:
-
- Volume in drive I is IFS_001
- Directory of I:\
-
- DISK1 <DIR> 8-26-91 2:19p

-
- The directories DISK1, MASKS, and INSTALL on the CD-ROM contain the
- application and installation software. The directories LISEZMOI AND
- PRINT_ME contain the documentation for the application provided on the disk.
- The INSTALL.EXE file is the program that controls installation of the
- application and the files that begin with the same four letters (in the
- above case IFS_) are the application data files.
-
-
- 2.3 Microsoft CD-ROM Extensions
-
- See the discussion of this subject in the printed booklet that accompanies
- this product.
-
-
- 2.4 Documentation for the IMF CD-ROM Applications
-
- Most of the documentation for the IMF CD-ROM Applications is contained in
- the directories PRINT_ME and LISEZMOI on the CD-ROM disk. This
- documentation has been created using very simple DOS text formatting and
- should print correctly on any personal computer printer. A sample of the
- items typically provided is given in the directory of PRINT_ME given below.
-
-
- Volume in drive I is IFS_001
- Directory of I:\PRINT_ME

-
- The items named IFS_DOCx are ducuments that provide additional detail aboul
- the coding and operation of the IMF products. The documents named IFS_TTxx
- are tutorials that lead the user through a step by step example of the use
- of an IMF product. The documents named REVISION provide a brief outline of
- the changes that are to be found in the current issue of the publication
- being addressed. In all cases, the extension identifies the working
- language of the document.
-
- 2.5 The Installation Program
-
- All IMF CD-ROM publications are shipped with a menu driven installation
- program. To install an IMF CD-ROM publication, follow the steps below:
-
- 1) Place the CD-ROM disk in your CD-ROM disk drive (this example assumes
- that this is drive D), and type
-
- D:<Enter>
-
- followed by
-
- INSTALL<Enter>
-
- 2) The very first screen will offer you a choice of languages in which you
- may work while doing the installation. The language you choose will
- also be the language in which the product operates when it is started
- for the first time. Please note that this initial default language may
- be changed changed at any time after the product has been installed.
-
- 3) Follow the instructions given on the screens by the installation
- program, making your choices as appropriate. You should note that the
- program always makes its own default choices. If you do not know which
- choice you prefer, these defaults are generally the best option.
-
- 4) If you wish to stop the installation you may press <Esc> at any time
- during the process.
-
-
- 2.6 Starting the IMF CD-ROM publications
-
- During the installation procedure, the files necessary for the IMF CD-ROM
- publication to function are installed in a directory (with the name choosen
- during the installation process) on your hard disk or floppy disk. At the
- same time a batch file with the name of the application is created in the
- root directory of the drive the IMF CD-ROM publication was installed on.
- This batch program starts the main program.
-
- After turning on your computer, type the application name (e.g. IFS_0991 for
- the September 1991 issue of the IFS CD-ROM publication) and press <Enter> at
- the DOS prompt. You will see a message on the screen that the program is
- being loaded. Following that, you will then see a copyright screen and be
- prompted to press any key to continue.
-
- If you receive an error message at this point please refer to the trouble
- shooting guide provided as a part of the application documentation. If you
- do not receive an error message, the main search mask for the application
- appears on the screen.
-
-
- 2.7 The Search Mask and Command Menu
-
- After pressing a key to continue from the title screen the cursor is located
- at the beginning of the first search field in a Search Mask. A search field
- is the area on the Search Mask where you can enter your search requests to
- the application.
-
- To initiate a search, you simply type valid search requests into one or more
- search fields. The types of searches that are valid in the application are
- explained in Chapter 3. You may wish to follow one or more of the tutorials
- as a guide through your first use of this product.
- Chapter 3 - SEARCH STRATEGIES
-
- ____________________________________________________________________________
-
-
- In order to search for a particular term, number, or name in one of the
- search fields in the the IMF CD-ROM publications Search Mask, type the term,
- number or name into the field and press <Enter>. Multiple search criteria
- may be entered into a field and connected with logical operators. A Search
- Mask with such entries is called a search strategy. Search strategies may
- contain very complex combinations of search criteria. The following
- sections describe how to enter a search strategy. Each available search
- command and option is explained.
-
-
- 3.1 Basic Searching
-
- You can move the cursor from search field to search field using the arrow
- keys or PgUp PgDn. A small arrow on the top or bottom of the rightmost
- perimeter of the Search Mask indicates whether there are more search fields
- above or below the visible screen.
-
- A valid search request has one or more search terms separated by logical
- operators or blanks. A search request may also contain truncation symbols or
- parentheses. The following are examples of valid entries in an IMF CD-ROM
- publication:
-
- France or Germany (in a country name field)
-
- fra* or GER* (in a country name field)
-
- 1980 to 1989 (in a years field)
-
- 34* or 6* without 65* (in a subject code field)
-
-
- The valid logical operators are as follows:
-
- AND (+) The search terms must occur together in the search field.
-
- OR (,) Either one or the other or both of the search terms must occur in
- the search field.
-
- NOT (#) NOT can be used alone (e.g. NOT MONEY) to locate all records that
- do not contain the search term in the search field, or it can be
- used as a connector (e.g. "6* AND NOT 65*").
-
- WITHOUT Same as AND NOT.
-
- ADJx The search terms must appear within x words of one another in the
- search field. The order in which they appear is important. If x
- is omitted, it defaults to 1.
-
- SAME The search terms must occur in the same field.
-
- SAMEs The search terms must occur in the same sentence.
-
- NEARx The search terms must appear within x terms of one another in the
- search field. The order in which they appear is irrelevant. If x
- is omitted, it defaults to 1.
-
- NEARSx The search terms must appear within x sentences of one another in
- the search field. The order in which they appear is irrelevant. If
- x is omitted, it defaults to 1.
-
-
- The valid truncation symbols are as follows:
-
- * Replaces any number of characters in the search term. It can come
- at the beginning, middle or end of a search term (e.g. afri* or
- *africa). No more than two occurrences per term are permitted.
-
- ? Replaces one character in the search term. It can be repeated and
- come anywhere in the search term (e.g., "11234???ZF...").
-
-
- Other valid field entries are:
-
- LIKE term Searches for the term using phonetic Matching. For example,
- "LIKE Mayer" looks for "Meier" and "Meyer" as well as
- "Mayer".
-
- < x Less than x.
-
- > x Greater than x.
-
- <= x Less than or equal to x.
-
- >= x Greater than or equal to x.
-
- <> x Not equal to x.
-
- x TO y Range search.
-
- x..y Range search.
-
- NONE Find records where the field is empty.
-
- ALL Find records where the field is not empty.
-
- where x and y stand for any alphanumeric or numeric search terms.
-
-
- Double quotes surrounding a search term (e.g. "term") will disable the
- recognition of logical operators (e.g. "AND" will search for the word AND).
- Double quotes will instruct the software to look for the search item in the
- line index first, if one is available.
-
- Not every possible field entry is available for each search field. To see
- which entries are valid for any search field, move the cursor onto the field
- and press F1 (Help). You will see help text that gives you the valid entries
- for that field. When you are finished viewing the help message, press <ESC>
- to return to the Search Mask.
-
- To execute a search, enter a valid search request into a search field and
- press <Enter>. To leave the field without executing the search, use the
- arrow keys.
-
- When you execute a search, a number on the right perimeter
- of the search screen appears in the row of the search field.
- This is the estimated number of records that meet the search
- criteria for this search field.
-
- When the search is completed, the final number of found
- records that meet the search criteria is displayed. The total
- number of records that meet the search criteria for all
- fields is displayed in the Connection: line, located in the
- bottom right corner of the Search Mask.
-
-
- 3.2 The Search Command Menu

-
- Only the selected range of records will be printed or
- exported.
-
-
- 4.2.5.7.2 Printer Type
-
- Use Printer Type to select the type of printer you are

- names appear as a matter of course as the column names in the
- *.DBF file. For DIF, the Output Field Names setting determines
- whether LABEL entries will be output. In the remaining output
- types, the first output record will consist of the field names,
- resulting in one more record being output than the number in the
- found set.
-
- With the cursor positioned on the Output Field Names entry
- area, press the spacebar to toggle between Yes and No.
- Choose Yes if you would like to output the field names along with

- Chapter 5 - THE the IMF CD-ROM publications DATABASE
-
-
-
- The purpose of the IMF CD-ROM publications is to give you rapid access
- to a very large
- amount of the IMF CD-ROM publications-related data from your PC.
-
- This chapter describes the structure of the IMF CD-ROM publications and
- the
- access options for the the IMF CD-ROM publications database.
-
-
- 5.1 Records
-
- The the IMF CD-ROM publications database is organized like a giant
- archive. The
- information about an individual the IMF CD-ROM publications item is
- collected in a
- record, one record per the IMF CD-ROM publications item. The size of
- the record
- depends on the amount of information available for that the IMF CD-ROM
- publications
- item.
-
- Each record is built up like a form in which the individual data
- is entered in the various fields on the form. Unlike a form,
- however, the individual fields in a record can be as long as
- necessary to hold all of the available information.
-
- The number of fields that you find in a document is not always
- the same. Fields that do not contain information will not be shown
- on the screen.
-
-
- 5.2 Fields
-
- Access to particular records takes place through their field
- contents. In order to find a particular record or set of
- records, the contents of at least one field per record
- must be entered in the Search Mask.
-
- You can search for any word or part of a word in a given field. More
- details about the search possibilities are given in Chapter 3.
-
-
- 5.3 Organization of the Database
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
